It’s exam season, and if you’re feeling the pressure, you’re not alone! We all know that having time to study is ideal, but sometimes life gets in the way, right? So, let’s work with what you’ve got! Here are my go-to, 7 last-minute study hacks to ace your exams and that’ll help you make the most out of every minute.

Last-Minute Study Hack 1: Prioritise High-Impact Topics

First things first: not all study material is created equal. When time’s tight, you’ve got to focus on the high scoring/ heavy weighted sections —the topics that are most likely to show up on the exam.

  • How to Do It: Take a quick look at any study guides, past exams, or summaries. Note down the big topics that carry the most weight or that you feel unsure about.
  • Pro Tip: Use a study planner (like ours, which is perfect for exam time!) to block off specific time slots for each topic. Don’t just study—plan to succeed.

Last-Minute Study Hack 2: Try Active Recall

Passive reading won’t cut it here. Active recall is all about quizzing yourself, which is way more effective for memory.

  • How to Do It: After each section, close your notes and ask yourself questions. Use flashcards, a digital quiz app, or even just a scrap piece of paper. Can you answer from memory?
  • Example: Let’s say you’re studying history dates. Cover them up and try to list each one from memory—don’t peek!

Last-Minute Study Hack 3: Use the Pomodoro Technique

Focus in bursts and give your brain a break. The Pomodoro Technique—25 minutes of focus, 5 minutes of rest—can be a game-changer.

  • How to Do It: Set a timer for 25 minutes, choose a topic, and go all-in. After your mini study sprint, take a short break. Move around, hydrate, grab a snack—anything to recharge.
  • Extra Tip: After four rounds, take a longer break. Trust me, this keeps your mind fresh and focused.

Last-Minute Study Hack 4: Make Visuals for Quick Memorisation

Diagrams, flowcharts, and mind maps are lifesavers when you’re short on time. The visual approach makes it easier for your brain to “see” the information when you’re in the exam.

  • How to Do It: Sketch out a mind map or flowchart for more complicated topics. Don’t worry about making it pretty—this is just for you.
  • Example: For science, draw a quick flowchart showing each step in cellular respiration or any process you’re studying.

You can use canva or notability to do this.

Last-Minute Study Hack 5: Practice with Mock Questions

If you’ve got access to practice questions, use them! Nothing helps you prepare like working through actual or similar questions.

  • How to Do It: Set a timer to simulate exam conditions and run through some questions. This will get you familiar with the question types and test your knowledge.
  • No Questions? If you don’t have any official ones, try making up your own or ask a friend for help.

Last-Minute Study Hack 6: Summarise Each Topic in Your Own Words

Break down complex topics into a few key points—summarising helps you get the gist without drowning in details.

  • How to Do It: After reading a section, write a quick summary of the main points without looking at your notes.
  • Example: If you’re reviewing the water cycle, sum it up in a sentence or two: “Water evaporates, condenses, and falls back as precipitation.”

Last-Minute Study Hack 7: Positive Self-Talk All the Way

Okay, real talk: exams are stressful, and the closer you get, the more that stress can creep in. It’s normal! Remind yourself of all the effort you’ve put in. Believe me, it matters.

  • How to Do It: Think positive thoughts, even if it sounds cheesy. Remind yourself, “I’ve got this,” “I know more than I think,” or my personal favorite, “I’m ready!”
  • Quick Reminder: Take a few deep breaths before you dive back into studying. Keep it calm, keep it confident.

One Last Thing…

You’re in the final stretch, and any bit of effort you put in right now will make a difference. If you haven’t already, grab one of our study planners to help you manage your time. It’s perfect for structuring those last-minute sessions and tracking what you’ve covered!

You’ve got this.
